Current Event #9: Toe sucking gets man jail time

At age 31, Michael Brown, was arrested for sucking on "the woman's toes" (StaffReports) while "helping her try on shoes" (StaffReports) at the Wal-Mart in Lincolnton. He seems to have an obsession with sucking on women's toes. What? What is wrong with this guy? Michael Brown told the judge, "'I [he] apologize [apologizes] to the victim. I [he] am [is] ready to take full responsibility for my [his] actions'" (StaffReports). Brown was registered as a sex offender after the incident.

I don't think that this has anything to do with any of my classes, but I think that it is something ridiculous and that people need to realize how crazy people can be and they need to know to watch out for dumb people like that. It might relate to a health class because it is not healthy to suck on someone's toes like that. Toe sucking? Really? What is wrong with this world?

I think that this event is ridiculous and I would NEVER let anyone suck on my toes, that is just weird and disgusting. I think that this affects my life because it shows me how stupid people can be and that I should watch my back and try on my own shoes without "help". Yuck.

  • What is the central idea of the passage and how it is developed and refined throughout the selection? Use evidence from the selection to support your answer.
The central idea of the passage is that Michael Brown became a "registered sex offender" (StaffReports) because of "sucking on a women's toes" (StaffReports).

Current Event #8:Doctors find hidden meth while performing surgery

A woman was injured after getting into a wreck and doctors had to perform surgery on her and they found "$2,000 worth of methamphetamine stashed inside her body" (Pickens). The doctors found the meth hidden inside a body cavity. The victims had no serious injuries from the chase.

This article relates to my biology class because it deals with drugs that are chemicals and we learned about different chemicals in science classes. In science classes we talk about how the body works and how it reacts to different chemicals. Meth is a very dangerous and highly addictive drug that people can get really messed up on it.

I feel like this is something that needs to be addressed because it is a very dangerous issue considering how meth makes people act violent. This event affects me because in the future I will have events like this to show me that drugs aren't worth getting hurt over. I don't agree with people stashing drugs inside their bodies.

  • How does the author support her claim? Use evidence from the selection to support your answer.

The author supports her claim by using direct quotes from the people involved.

Current event #7: Teen accused of posting nude photos to instagram due in court

An 18-year-old teenager was said to have posted nude pictures of other teens on Instagram and "this case goes back several months and involves the arrests of his parents. Police started investigating Peter Kiever in October, and arrested him last week" (WSOC) and is going to face a judge on Monday. Peter has been charged with "14 felony sex crimes" (WSOC). His parents resisted the officers, which is why they were arrested.

This is related to school in general because this teen was a student accused of putting nude pictures of other students online. Someone in our school could have been accused of the exact same thing and it is a scary thing because it is illegal to take pictures of someone naked without their permission or when they don't know about it. It is also something that could happen anywhere.

I believe that something should be done about this even if he really didn't post those pictures, someone should find out who did it and punish them because it is wrong to take nude pictures of others that would be embarrassed or upset about it. This event affects me by making me feel more conscious about my surroundings and what goes on around me and other people's actions. I do not agree with posting nude pictures of other people.

  • How does the author use language to advance her point of view? Use evidence from the selection to support your answer.
The author uses language that is very visual, which can help create images for the reader such as: "naked" , "nude", and "sex crimes" (WSOC). It advances the authors point of view because it shows that the author isn't being shy about what the crime was and what happened.

Current event #6: Child falling from window saved by stranger, box spring mattress

A couple saw a toddler dangling from a three story building and with their quick thinking, they caught the toddler using a box spring mattress. The child was spotted trying to crawl out of the window. The child was not injured or hurt.

This event can relate to my psychology class because the child showed no signs of trauma, but if it did then they would use psychology to help it. Psychology is used for many different things in life and in this case it would be used for a toddler and for when it got older. I think that this event is a very scary thing because if you are not careful and watchful enough of your child then something bad might happen such as this.

Current event #5: Baby born in Jack In The Box parking lot

Paul DuPree worked in the medical field delivering babies for twenty years, but he never though he would have to deliver his own child. Paul's baby girl, "Harper Lynn DuPree was born in the front seat of a minivan in the parking lot of a Jack in the Box restaurant on N.C. 16 in Charlotte" (Turbyfill). Harper was born at 12:31 a.m. February 16 and is a very healthy 7-pound baby girl.

This event is connected to my science class that I took because it involves life. Biology is the study of life and this new baby was born into the world on February 16. I believe that this baby girl is very lucky her dad knew how to deliver a baby.

I feel like this event affects me by making me almost change my mind about having kids. My position for this issue is that it is amazing that the baby was born completely healthy. I believe that this little girl is so cute and I am glad I found this article.

  • How does the structure of the text refine and support the author's claim? Use evidence from the selection to support your answer.
The structure of the text refines and supports the author's claim by the way the author organized it because she separated it with different sub headings such as: "False alarms, fast delivery, great support, [and] No joke" (Turbyfill). Also the author uses quotes from the parents to show her claim.

Current Event #4: Prank turns deadly for Arkansas teen

"A 15-year-old girl" (Stucker and Ford) died from a prank going completely wrong. Adrian Broadway was with a group of teens and they went to someone's house to get revenge on another teen that had pranked her on Halloween and all they did was throw toilet paper, eggs, and mayonnaise at the car that was parked there. "As they were leaving, a man came out of the house and opened fire" (Stucker and Ford). The teenage driver "suffered injuries to his right arm" (Stucker and Ford) and was rushed to a hospital and was treated and released. The shooter was identified as a 48-year-old named Willie Nobel and he was charged with first-degree murder.

This current event relates to school because it is a little like bullying and bullying happens in school. Also, I have experienced bullying before and pranks are kind of like bullying to me. I believe that the pranks that teens do just go way too far sometimes. I feel like this event is really crazy because a 48-year-old shot a teenager and I think that is going way too far.

  • How does the author support his/her claim?Use evidence from the selection to prove your answer.
The authors support their claim by using quotes from what people said about the prank, for example, Lt. Sydney Allen stated, "When those kids left to go out and do this, they--by no means--did any one of them think that this was going to be a horrible event" (Stucker and Ford). Also they name specific people that were involved or were there to sit in court.

Current Event #3: Kansas teen uses 3-D printer to make hand for boy

Mason Wilde "has always had a passion for figuring out how things work" (Williams). Mason took apart his mother's table and ottoman when he was 4 years old, also built a computer last year completely from scratch. But, about two months ago, the 16-year-old Mason, made a prosthetic hand using a 3-D printer for a "family friend's 9-year-old son [Matthew] who was born without fingers on one hand" (Williams). Mathew's condition only occurs for unknown reasons "in about 5 out of every 10,000 births" (Williams).
This article is connected to my Biology class (and Robotics club) because it involves the study of life and technology as well. This shows that people can use technology and science to produce an invention that can change, a persons or whole families, lives completely. The prosthetic hand that Matthew has, has helped him gain new confidence and new outlook on his condition.
I loved this article before I started reading it; as soon as I saw the title I was excited. I read the entire article and thought that it was an amazing thing that Mason did for that little boy that was born without fingers on his right hand. It is sad that he was born that way, but it is awesome that he now has a functioning prosthetic hand. This event affects me by making me feel more appreciative that I wasn't born without any of my limbs, but it also makes me feel confident that one day I might be able to make a difference in someone else's life one day in some way.

  • What is the author's point of view, and how does it impact the overall effect of the text? Use evidence from the selection to support your answer.
The author's point of view seems to be third person point of view because she knows everything about this event but isn't involved in the event itself. She has quotes of what Matthew's mom has said and what other people have said which proves that it is third person.
